Municipalities, at the forefront of efforts to achieve sustainability, must show leadership with environmentally responsible operations and public education on environmental issues. Whether dealing with water and sewage treatment, solid waste management, land use, transportation, smog or climate change, the most effective way to deal with environmental issues is to anticipate and prevent them.
2. What environmental issues does the Workgroup focus on?
The Workgroup recognizes that municipalities serve as both a regulator and as a corporation and view environmental issues from both perspectives. In addition, pollution prevention has broadened from an industrial waste reduction strategy to now mean pesticide management, product redesign, energy efficiency, community planning and transportation to name but a few. Issues could include: community-based programs, sustainability, and pollution prevention.
3. What is the role of Workgroup?
The Workgroup serves the following functions:
• Network for municipal pollution prevention practitioners
• Help municipalities identify opportunities and implement pollution
prevention
• Advance the concept of community sustainability through pollution
prevention
4. What is the Workgroup's relationship with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities?
The Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention is presently pursuing opportunities to work collaboratively with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
5. What are the potential areas of involvement for this Workgroup?
The potential areas of involvement are limitless. Opportunities include:
• Technical advisory committee to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities
• Provide an advisory role to Industry Canada's Municipal EMS pilot project
• Providing input into the designing of a municipal session at next year's
Canadian Pollution Prevention Roundtable
6. How often does the Workgroup meet?
The Workgroup corresponds predominantly by e-mail and quarterly conference calls. The Workgroup will conduct face-to-face meetings at Canadian Pollution Prevention Roundtables.
7. How does a municipality become a member of the Workgroup?
Members of the Municipal Workgroup would be required to maintain membership in the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention. To find out more about membership »»click here
