City of Hamilton Pollution Prevention Strategy: Sewer Use By-law Report, July 2009
The City of Hamilton's Water and Wastewater Division retained the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2) and the Ontario Centre for Environmental Technology Advancement (OCETA) to recommend a pollution prevention (P2) strategy and program for the City. The report includes a review of selected municipal and regional pollution prevention programs aimed at reducing pollutant inputs into sewer systems in Canada and the United States. The report reviewed, analyzed and interpreted an extensive amount of available federal, provincial and municipal data on sewer use, hazardous waste and criteria air contaminant data and related information. The review and analysis focused on the small to medium sized manufacturers (SMEs). The report provided the City of Hamilton with recommended design criteria, ranked target sectors and an overall program design for the pollution prevention strategy.
Industry Survey on Methods Used to Prevent and Reduce Pollutant Emissions from Construction and Demolition Activities
C2P2 supported Environment Canada's Construction and Demolition Multi-stakeholder Working Group (C&DWG) to develop measures to reduce and prevent emissions from the sector. This included the development and distribution of an industry survey requesting information on methods currently used to prevent and reduce emissions from construction and demolition activities, as well as the compilation and interpretation of survey results. Both on-line and hard copy surveys were developed and promoted widely to association and corporate firms from across the country. The target audience for the survey included owners, workers, and health and safety officers.
Municipal Pesticide Reduction Strategy
In partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, C2P2 developed a national strategy for pesticide reduction at the municipal level. During the strategy implementation phase, C2P2 developed the Responsible Pest Management web site in consultation with the FCM Pesticide Steering Committee. The web site provided municipal governments and communities with access to information, tools and networks to maximize opportunities for pesticide reduction.
Northern Ontario Eco-efficiency Program for Industrial Manufacturing SMEs
Working on behalf of Environment Canada-Ontario Region, Federal Programs division, C2P2 assessed the feasibility of the development of an eco-efficiency program for small and medium-sized industrial manufacturing enterprises in northern Ontario. C2P2 also outlined potential partners, lesson learned from similar programs and a framework for assessment.
P2 Options Presentation
The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), now referred to as Metro Vancouver, undertook a review and update of Sewer Use Bylaw No. 164. As part of the review process, C2P2 explored how P2 had been integrated into programs in other jurisdictions. Based on this research, C2P2 identified five policy options for consideration by the GVRD and their stakeholders.
SME partnership for a Sustainable Guelph
C2P2 assisted the University of Guelph, School of Environmental Design and Rural Development in the development of a program to use student interns to support environmental improvement initiatives in Guelph-based small and medium sized businesses.
